Swellendam is situated in the Western Cape Province, 220km east from Cape
Town. The town is roughly halfway between Cape Town and George/Knysna, and
is bordering on the Garden Route and the Route 62.
Swellendam is one of the oldest towns of South Africa and has much to
offer. The famous open-air Drostdy Museum, excellent restaurants, shops and
art-and-craft projects, charming historical buildings, a beautiful golf
course, are just a few examples. On the fringe of the town, you will find
the Bontebok National Park and the Marloth Nature Reserve; nature parks
that provide various possibilities for hiking, horse riding, and bird
watching.
There is an endless selection of activities and day trips to choose from. A
visit to the Hoop Nature Reserve to see the whales, or a drive to the
southernmost point of the continent in Cape Agulhas. Canoeing on the Breede
River, or a day trip through the Little Karoo with its charming rural
villages. A wine tasting trip is also recommended: flower fringed roads,
spectacular vineyards and world-class wines in Robertson and surroundings.
The Robertson Wine Route represents about 50 wineries, from small family
owned boutique wineries to medium state-of-the-art estates and large modern
wineries.
